The Mount Vision Pastel Company was founded in 2000, by artist Karl Kelly (a former paint maker for a small oil paint company). Handmade in small batches in Mount Vision, New York, the pastels possess a wonderfully soft and buttery feel. The pigment easily releases to the pastel surface with little resistance, allowing layers to build without becoming slick. Mount Vision Handmade Soft Pastels are consistently tested to achieve the best feel and color intensity for each pastel color. Mount Vision utilizes both traditional and synthetic pigments, which make great substitutes for traditional painting pigments that are health hazards to use in pastels (such as cadmiums, cobalts, etc.) Mount Vision's manufacturing process is simple and straightforward, creating a truly handmade product with great love and care by dedicated craftsmen. First, the pigments and chalks(or other binder) are weighed out on a scale, and then placed in an industrial sized mixing bowl. Once ready, the pastel lines are cut to size and then carefully rolled by hand to create a more uniform shape. Unison Soft Pastels, developed by British artist John Hersey, began in the early ‘80s when he could not find the working qualities he was looking for in the factory made pastels that were on the market. Hersey was disappointed that the mass-produced pastels broke too easily, were not consistent in texture, and didn’t suit his color vision as a painter. For several years he worked on handmade methods of production, the texture of his pigments in mixtures, and creating sensible color sequences. Once he finally felt satisfied and presented his pastels publicly, they were met with immediate enthusiasm! The pastels are created with superior-quality pigments in an 8 stage process, by a small staff of skilled artisans. Following a unique recipe for each custom created by John Hersey, all the dry pigments for the specific color being made are added to a bowl. Some specific recipes can call for up to 7 pigments! Pigments are then mixed carefully and binder is added where needed for the particular color’s properties— sometimes none is required. The mixture is thoroughly mixed to a thick consistency, and then spooned out in equal proportions onto sheets of blotting paper, resting until they are dry enough to handle. Drying time at this step can vary depending on pigment, and can take from a few minutes up to 24 hours. The spooned out portions are them squeezed to release excess water, to prepare them for rolling. Each portion is then carefully rolled into the pastel shape by hand, to give a unique texture that will help provide a consistent response. After drying slightly longer on the blotting paper, the rolled pastels are then cut exactly to size with a handmade cutting tool. After cutting, the pastels are gently placed on wire trays and dried overnight in a very gentle heat. They are then taken and stored in the packing room, to await hand-labeling. Landscape Colors The world's finest oil pastels, made with high-quality pigments The world's finest oil pastels were originally created in 1949 by Henri Sennelier for Pablo Picasso. Picasso, a frequent patron of Henri's art supply shop across from the Louvre, was looking for a vibrant colored pastel he could use to paint on anything, giving examples of wood, metals, paper, canvas, etc. Picasso enjoyed the immediacy of children's crayons and soft pastels but wanted to be able to use their freer, gestural qualities on all surfaces and wanted them to be professional quality and lightfast. Sennelier's first oil pastels have since been the hallmark and long-time standard of the medium. Creamy, lightfast, and vibrant, Sennelier Oil Pastels use the same high-quality pigments and high pigment loads as their other lines, combined with a pure, synthetic binding medium and mineral wax. As the binding medium does not oxidize, it will not jeopardize the artwork's film stability or surface. They are acid-free, so there is no need to prime any surface as a preventative barrier for protection against deterioration from acid. The neutral pH mineral wax provides a remarkably creamy texture that will never harden or yellow, thus providing excellent adhesion to any support without ever fearing cracking. They may be thinned with spike lavender oil, turpentine, or mineral spirits to make washes or soften drawing strokes or blended with the Transparent Blending Medium stick for a wide array of effects. They are the ideal medium for artists on the go, as sets can be taken on airplanes without any restrictions since they contain no solvents or liquids like tubed paints. The traditional and La Grande sticks come in over 120 vibrant colors, including iridescent, metallic, and fluorescent colors. Landscape Colors Sennelier Extra Soft Pastel Sets utilize a deep and rich history of color! In 1887, a huge supporter of the arts named Gustave Sennelier opened his artist’s supply store “Maison Sennelier” directly across from the Louvre in Paris, France. Sennelier was a talented chemist by trade, but through his love of art had a sharply honed eye for value and color. His extensive background researching and studying pigment origins led him to create his own personal pigment mixtures to sell directly to his customers (initially he sold his paints through existing manufacturers). His friendships with prominent artists of the day (whether already famous or yet undiscovered) and his fierce loyalty to them and their craft resulted in creating multiple mediums designed specifically for them. At the turn of the 20th century, Gustave dedicated three years of development to create an extra soft pastel for his friend and patron, artist Edgar Degas. His goal was to create a stick with the highest amount of pigment possible, adding only the transparent binder of gum arabic (a watercolor binder) and mineral fines to change the gradients of the colors (increasing amounts as the pastel stick lightens towards white). The use of the gum arabic creates a soft pastel that can also be wetted once on the substrate, and spread like a watercolor. With a total of 525 colors and the largest chromatic range offered in soft pastels, their vibrancy and brightness can attributed to not containing clays, like other brands. Drying time at this step can vary depending on pigment. The spooned out portions are then squeezed to release excess water, to prepare them for rolling. Each portion is then carefully rolled into the pastel shape by hand, to give a unique texture that will help provide a consistent response.
