Tusc & Pine Oil Color Grays Starter Set of 5, 40ml Tubes

The Gray Starter Set contains Titanium White (in safflower oil), Neutral Gray 3, Neutral Gray 5, Neutral Gray 7, and Lamp Black. Neutral Grays allow artists to adjust the value and chroma of any color without altering its base tone. The three Neutral Grays in this set range from number 3 (darkest) to number 7 (lightest). Along with Titanium White and Ivory Black, they produce balanced value gradations for color mixing and the creation of tonal grisaille paintings. Color can then be glazed on top of the value study in full strength or desaturated with gray.

The Mixing Starter Set is based on the CMY color wheel and includes Yellow Citron, Quinacridone Red Deep, Phthalo Blue, Titanium White (in safflower oil), and Ivory Black. Mixing based on the CMY wheel is a subtractive process (pigments absorb the light they do not reflect), which is the opposite of the additive light system (RYB). The CMY pigments in this set are semi-transparent and transparent, but when used thickly or mixed with black or white, they become opaque.

Interestingly, Red Iron Oxide was called "bloodstone" in ancient Greece because of its blood-red color. The color closely resembles the signature red clay of North Carolina.
