A clear lacquer coating encases the lead, which is made of special oils and binders. This combination produces dense even strokes without the need for heavy pressure to lay down color. The loss from sharpening is virtually non-existent as the entire lead can be used, from pointed tip to angling on its side for covering larger areas.
